The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
